About Diet Rehab

“How did we ever get to a point where we need investigative journalists to tell us where our food comes from and nutritionists to determine the dinner menu?” Michael Pollan, The Omnivore’s Dilemma

I admit it: Food confuses me. Until the recent onslaught of reality weight-loss shows, self-help diet books and food trends (organic, local, raw, vegetarian), I thought I ate reasonably well. Now I’m not so sure.

Welcome to Diet Rehab. My name is Liz and I live in Toronto. For the next 6 weeks or so, I’ll be in rehab with Toronto-based nutritionist Meghan Telpner. After that, I’ll have to make all food-related decisions on my own.  I’m trying to eat locally (not an easy feat in Toronto), avoid all artificial flavours and additives as well as anything processed. If you’re just as curious as I am about nutrition then please join me in this 12-grain challenge.

While I’m under Meghan’s care, I’ll be taking her advice and only eating/drinking/doing what she advises. I’ll keep you updated with the cost of trying to eat locally and organically in Toronto. I’ll let you know where I buy my food, what I’m eating, how it tastes and how long it takes me to cook and prepare it.

I want to find out if changing what I eat changes how I feel.

My hope is that by the new year, I’ll be a healthier, happier, leaner me with a new appreciation for quinoa.
