A request for assistance

March 10, 2009

Since I’m taking classes and work at a restaurant, I tend to eat early dinners (5 pm or earlier) and then eat again when I get in at night—usually around 10-11 pm.  When I get home, I’m hungry and ready for dinner…again. I don’t want to eat more than I need–especially at night–but I’m legitimately hungry and I find it hard to sleep on an empty stomach.  Which is better? To eat just before bed or go to bed hungry? If I do eat before bed, does anyone have any healthy–yet satisfying–suggestions?

I don’t know if it’s just me or not, but I always sleep better on an empty stomach.

I would suggest taking a snack to school with you- something light like some veggies or an apple with some almond butter. On the nights you work at the restaurant, if you really must eat- than again, something light. Some soup, apple sauce with some ground flax. Heavy meals and lots of protein will most certainly disrupt your sleep. Remember that all you are going to do is sleep, your body doesn’t use up much energy sleeping. Just be sure ot have a big healthy high protein breakfast when you wake up.

All of that, I know, is easier said than done.

I have a similar issue. Lately I’ve been getting home at no earlier than 10 o’clock, and I find my hunger gets to the point where it actually wakes me up in the middle of the night.. although i find it even harder to try and fall asleep when my tummy is growling.

I try and just have some water to make me feel full, but it hasn’t seemed to work. I know late night eating is really bad for disrupting sleep (as well as weight gain), and I feel like sometimes its a mental thing.. if my body knows I haven’t eaten, it seems to focus more on my hunger.

What I am going to actively try and do this week (i have a massive bag of fruits and nuts sitting next to me on my desk) is try and eat a lot more throughout the day so when I get home I’m not STARVING to the point where I feel I need a big meal at night. Hope it works.

Grain of the Week: MILLET is a tiny, round grain that can be white, gray, yellow or red. Like barley, it can be pearled and hulled, but it can also be cracked and this is often how it is found in cereals. Millet is a great source of phosphorous and magnesium. Phosphorus plays a roll in virtually every cell in the body. Phosphorus also helps the body to metabolise fats. A cup of cooked millet provides approximately 24.0% of the daily phosphorus needs. Plain, cooked (boiled) millet can be a bit bland--be sure to season your millet well.
