Friday Food Face Off: Peanut Butter vs Organic Peanut Butter

Some of you who know me know how much I love peanut butter.
I didn’t get it very often as a kid, but as soon as I moved out I got myself a jumbo-jar. I love it with apples amd bananas. Sometimes, I even take a spoonful of it on its own…kinda gross, I know, but I’m a big peanut butter fan!
In the interest of rehab, I recently bought an organic version.
Sure, it’s better for me. It doesn’t contain anything other than organic peanuts while my previous jar had a lengthy list of ingredients, mostly ones I couldn’t pronounce. But I miss the creaminess of the non-organic kind. The oil doesn’t separate and that is NOT the case with the organic PB. I suppose it’s a good thing that I’m reminded just how much oil/ fat is in peanut butter as it helps me to curb my spoon habit! I just find the organic peanut butter a bit too stiff and a bit too strong flavour-wise.
I always thought I was easy-going when it came to food. I like most things. But if I can’t handle REAL peanut butter, does this mean that my palate has been damaged forever by the less flavourful, chemically enriched, modified food?
I know that I will get used to it, but at this point I have to give organic peanut butter a Thumbs Down!

I love organic natural peanut butter. Sure you have to stir it, but only once if you keep it in the fridge. I have to say, though, my favorite is almond butter. It’s good by itself, or sometimes I sneak a tbs into my stir fry

The creaminess, lack of oil separtation… you can thank the hydrogenated vegetable oil and emulsifiers for that. Ich. The lack of sugar too is something to get used to because now what you’re tasting is actually the peanuts
A little swirl of stevia could help with that. And storing it upside down also helps with the oil settling thing.
Try crunchy almond butter. That’s my personal favourite.

I just bought some Peanut Butter & Co. crunchy peanut butter for the first time yesterday. Gave it a good stir in a bowl, put it back into the container, and put it in the fridge. It’s nice and creamy! And I agree…it’s definately a different taste without all the added sugar, ect. but nothing that we can’t get used to!

Your taste buds will adjust over time, hang in there or try having it together with a little honey. You’re probably missing what food marketers call “mouth feel” as there is no hydrogenated vegetable oil. (Years ago this used to be vegetable shortening, i.e. trans fat!) Have a look at the label on a regular brand and you will see they are often about half hydrogenated vegetable oil and icing sugar.
I like the real peanuts President’s Choice Blue Menu smoothy variety. Another good thing is the nice arm workout required to stir one up.

I’ve become a convert of MaraNatha natural peanut butter. The list of ingredients are all easy to read: peanuts, organic palm oil, organic cane sugar and sea salt. It doesn’t seperate like the other organic ones can. But have to say, taste wise, I’m not with you, Sister. Natural/organic peanut butter is so much better!

Thanks for the suggestions, guys! I am willing to give the organic peanut butter another chance–I promise! I’m keeping my fingers optimistically crossed that my taste buds will adapt to real food!

Hey Liz,
You’ll get used to the awesome peanut buttery goodness of the real stuff and be ruined for the old icing stuff forever. Trust. I store my just-peanuts peanut butter in the fridge upside down. This cuts down on the stirring and the mess. Genius, I think, if I do say so myself.
